In 1655, French courtiers were spending huge sums of money on Italian and Flemish laces. Thinking that money would be better spent at home, King Louis XIV decided to invest in improving French lace. So, he brought Italy’s Venetian lace makers to Normandy to train the lace artisans of Alencon.
